SCENE:

Upon the barren plains that served as both their sanctuary and prison, beneath a canopy of celestial grief laden with the tears that dared not fall, Jasper and Yvette stood, their figures bent not by the merciless gusts that clawed at their clothing, but by the unbearable weight of loss. Jasper cradled the final stone, its cold surface searing his hands, as he placed it atop the cairn—a mute testament to the child they could no longer embrace.

Jasper turned, his eyes—windows to a soul fractured by sorrow—finding Yvette. Her face, once a vivid tapestry of life's joys and hardships, now bore the stark pallor of the relentless winter that had stolen more than their comfort.

"Yvette," he murmured, his voice echoing the desolation of a man fragmented by regret. "I...I should have amassed more coal. I was mistaken."

His confession hung in the air, a wounded bird struggling against the tempest, its flight incomplete. Yvette remained still, her gaze anchored to the rocky testament of their child's fleeting existence. "You traded our survival for grains and sweetener to distill your brew, didn't you?" Her voice was a placid lake, its depths concealing currents of resigned despair that cut through him sharper than any reproach could have.

"I...I needed it," Jasper managed, his desperation oozing into his hastily spoken defense. "To outlast the winter's cruelty."

"We all have necessities, Jasper," she retorted. Swiveling towards him, the etched lines of grief on her countenance stark against the pallid landscape. "Our child needed warmth. Our remaining children need a father."

Her words, gently uttered, carved themselves into Jasper's heart. "I am present, Yvette. I am their father," he countered weakly.

"You've drowned the father our family required in your brew. I question how much of him remains." Yvette's voice wavered, and a single tear betrayed her control, tracing a glistening path down her weathered cheek. "You gave your word, Jasper."

"I am aware..." His response was a ghostly whisper, barely discernible against the wind's mournful lament. "I have failed."

Yvette offered no response, yet her silence was an echo in the vast expanse, a tacit acknowledgment of his shortcomings, a reluctant acceptance of their loss. It was a heartrending beginning, yet a beginning nonetheless. And it was in that moment that Jasper understood: his path towards sobriety wasn't solely his journey to redemption—it was his family's quest for survival. It was the promise of spring within his heart's never-ending winter.

POEM:

Embers ignite, beneath a sky,
Where chaos dances and shadows lie.
Through storms of salt and winds that pry,
We persist, we endure, we defy.

Crystals of faith, in hands that shake,
Coals of resolve, for survival's sake.
Challenges as vast as a forsaken lake,
Yet, we gather strength with each step we take.

Over us, a blanket of uncertainty unfurled,
In a world, tempestuous, wild, and whirled.
Yet within us, hope's banner is unfailingly held,
Against the winds, against the world, placed closed, withheld.

For we are the embers that brave the frost,
Counting not what's gained, but what's lost.
A testament to resilience, to the lines we've crossed,

In us, the flames of tomorrow, at any cost.

lyrics

high winds blow home
sandstorms bring salt
faith I bring coals
gathered for worse
over us...
