In the heart of the icy haven, bathed in the glow of lights from ancient machines, stood the hibernation chamber. The immense, cylindrical tank was etched with the hoarfrost of countless freeze outs, a relic of a past world repurposed to sustain life in the present.
Eli, despite his usual charisma, was unusually quiet. He laid in the hibernation chamber in preparation for the deep sleep. The light threw his youthful features into sharp relief, emphasizing the bone structure he shared with his older sister.
"Ready?" Avery asked, her voice soft in the cool, echoing chamber. Her hands, skilled and steady, were busily preparing the hibernation equipment.
Eli glanced at her, a wistful smile playing at the corners of his lips. "I suppose one never truly is. It's a strange sensation, to willingly step into a sleep that lasts years."
Avery paused, swallowing the lump in her throat. "Eli," she began, her voice shaky. "I’ve take every precaution..."
"I know, sis," he cut her off gently, his expression filled with a calm acceptance. "You understand the old technology better than anyone else. That is why this duty falls to you. But there's always a chance that I might not wake up. Fewer do every time."
The raw honesty in his words stung. Avery looked at him, her heart aching. Tears welled in her eyes as she prepped the injection, filled with the hibernation serum. "After you, I'll put the others to sleep. And then... then I'll join you."
Eli squeezed her hand. "And I'll see you on the other side, sis. When the frost has passed, we'll walk under the sun again. Has Cora returned from her scavenge yet?" Avery paused, another emotion overtaking her, urgency and worry.
"They have rang the bell for her but she must be too far away still. But she'll join us soon I’m sure. She’s already overdue," Avery added, the thought of the dark-haired huntress bringing a momentary solace and a pang of need for her. “I’ll see her shortly I’m sure. But for now let’s get you settled little brother.” Eli nodded in agreement.
As Avery administered the serum, their eyes met. A silent understanding passed between them, a tender goodbye tangled with the fear of the unknown. The serum took hold and Eli's eyes fluttered close.
POEM:
Freeze out, an abrupt descent,
As warmth takes leave.
In bitter storms and winds,
we find heart in deepest dark.
Sleep in, surrender to the silence,
Hibernate in peace, forever quiet.
Beneath the ice, beneath the day,
Into shadows, we fade away.
Fade away into the darkness,
Descend into sleep's small remainder.
Fade into hearts of gladness,
No more dreams of ice and hunger.
Fade away beneath the ice,
To the rhythm of the snow falling.
In the frost-bound world we stay,
Forever asleep, we fade away.
lyrics
Freeze out
A sudden change in weather
finding heart in deepest dark
Sleep in
Hibernate forever
Beneath the ice we will fade away
Fade away into darkness
Fade into the hearts of gladness
Fade away

Soft Kill is a fountain of beautiful inspiration and creativity. “Trouble” might be my favorite song of 2023. It some how invoked a feeling of instant nostalgia in me. Luma Fade
Since its release, at the height of the pandemic, this album gave me hope through a very dark time and inspired me to start making music again. This has depths way beyond Post-punk revivalism. Luma Fade
My fellow Floridians, Cathedral Bells have been entrancing me with their fast-paced dream pop that sounds darkly-tinted and carefree at once. It’s a bitter-sweet blissful blur I can’t get enough of. Luma Fade
